Filtration & Flow

Filtration is is one key element to any successful aquarium. The education on filtration is rather loose so we plan to clear this up for you here. There are various styles of filters. External, Internal, Hang on the back (HOB), sponge filters and more.

External Cannister Filter

This is the primary option for those above 150L or more. We recommend our customers at least 100L go external. The reason for this is due to larger surface area for nitrifying bacteria and much higher flow rate. Flow rate is vital to ensure you have enough flow. This ensures you have enough nutrient and CO2 circulation so that it reaches all parts of the tank.

If your tank is 100L, times this by 5 = 500Litres Per Hour (LPH) this should be the minimum a heavily planted aquascape should have. In conjunction to this, to force the water to return to the inlet. Keep both inlet and outlet together. This forces the water to do a complete circuit and return. Ensuring ultimate filtration.

Internal Filters

Internal filters come in all forms of shapes and sizes. We would recommend to use these up to 100-150L. Ensuring the filter is covering the minimum amount of flow required. A good internal filter should come with sponge and some form of biological media for your nitrifying bacteria to latch on to. These can take up space within the tank, it is advisable to disguise it with hardscape and plants so it is not as obvious.

3

Hang on the Back

HOB filters are not as commonly seen or used as standard internals or externals but still over a convenient way to filter your tank without actually being in the tank. They can hold a good amount of biological media and good flow.

These types of filters are only appropriate for tanks that is rimless, as the hood can be to big to install.

4

Sponge Filter

Sponge filters are very handy for breeding tanks, such as Discus pair or livebearers. Their capacity for flow is very minimal, therefore we would recommend these filters for shrimp tanks, minimal bio load within the system.

These are powered by an air pump with airline that sits outside of the aquarium. It is highly recommended to install a check valve within the airline. This prevents the water from back syphoning
